Misunderstandings
Nilk · 2024
VERSE
No, nobody could imagine
What I think
What I dream
What I need to understand about myself
And today's another day to play myself along
Running away
From finding my way
Annotation
I felt incomprehensible to everyone, and uncomfortable with everyone. I still had to understand myself. Every day I pretended everything was fine, but I was just running away from suffering.
Cause I'm chasing my demons in the dark
Watching all my certainties fall apart
From within my heart
Annotation
And I sinned, I hid in myself, in my filth. In my heart I had no certainties.
CHORUS
I won't bother you further
I would talk to myself my whole life
So long I've been misunderstood
I just kept on searching for a light
Like anyone else alive
God, I think I've misunderstood
Annotation
I felt like a burden to everyone, what I had inside didn’t matter and was misunderstood anyway. At home I couldn’t communicate anything. I was frustrated: trying to do good, believe in God, seek a light, yet I was increasingly alone and felt God had failed.
VERSE
No, nobody knows a way
To wash away from the mind
Trivial wishes of an empty existence
Annotation
I was lost in wrong, worldly thoughts, thinking they would bring happiness but they kept me stuck.
Meanwhile I need to know
The hidden meanings of my living
Made up of hate
And cold indifference
Annotation
I hated everyone, I was closed in myself, indifferent to the world that ignored me. I wondered if I would be enough for myself.
Following a contrail in the sky
That is fading fast before my eyes
I'm wasting all my life
Annotation
I felt time passing and I didn’t understand what I was doing with my life.
CHORUS
So I won't bother you further
I'd talk to myself my whole life
So long I've been misunderstood
I just kept on searching for a light
But damn!
Like anyone else alive
God, I think I've misunderstood
Annotation
I was even more frustrated, slipping down, thinking: 'God, wasn’t this what you wanted? Maybe I misunderstood?!'
BRIDGE
Oh, I won't bother further
I'd talk to myself my whole life
So long I have
For so long I've been
So long I
Annotation
I was apathetic, sad, shutting down, letting harmful thoughts sneak in.
BRIDGE
I've been told to sacrifice
What I'd have loved and wanted
But God, I didn't want to die
So long
I've been told to sacrifice
What I'd have loved and wanted
God, I didn't want to waste my time
Annotation
I was recovering, but I was furious. The verse from Luke 14:26-27 echoed mockingly: should I accept everything given and reject what I desired? It felt like dying. At the same time, it reminded me of what the world told me, like 'you don’t deserve to live', words that were really said to me.
CHORUS
I won't bother you further (I've been told to sacrifice)
I would talk to myself my whole life (What I'd have loved and wanted)
So long I've been misunderstood (But God, I didn't want to die)
I just kept on searching for a light (I've been told to sacrifice)
Like anyone else alive (What I'd have loved and wanted)
God, I think I've misunderstood
Annotation
I repeated everything, as if I hadn’t understood and maybe shouldn’t speak anymore. Meanwhile, the bridge words reminded me of the evangelic mission in the world, the conflict between faith, desires, and what the world imposed.
Behind the song
Misunderstandings comes from a time when I felt completely alone. At school, I was bullied; at home, I was the “happy” one, but also the one who was always scolded. Nobody truly saw what I was going through. I didn’t feel understood by anyone. Neither my family nor those around me. What happened to me outside the house simply didn’t exist for anyone.
At some point, I shut myself off. I took refuge in music. I became almost apathetic, and angry at the world. Without really knowing what I was doing, I started writing and composing. It was the only way to make sense of what I had inside. The more I wrote, the more I isolated myself. But it was also the only place where I could feel “something”.
The song is a continuous dialogue between myself and myself. And between me and God. A dialogue with the awareness that maybe nobody is listening. Maybe not even Him. This song also contains the darkest parts: moments when I thought of ending it all. I didn’t, thanks in part to the faith I was taught. But the conflict remained. The line “I’ve been told to sacrifice what I’d have loved and wanted” is the core of everything. On one side, the voices of the world: telling me I was worth nothing, that I didn’t deserve to live, that music was useless. On the other side, the Gospel: sacrifice, losing to find, embracing the cross. A message meant to save you, but without faith or with an immature faith, it can’t be understood or accepted, and even feels like an imposition for the weak.
Misunderstandings is this: the feeling of having misunderstood everything, life, others, God, myself. Nobody can understand, and maybe nobody listens.
